One of the joys of living in Winnipeg, Manitoba, is the "badge of honour" we wear when we get a great deal for something we buy.
You 'buy' a funeral because someone you care about has died, and you need to create the means of celebrating, grieving and setting positive emotional foundations for living without them.
Kinda hard to move on when you're still focused on the 'deal,' you got from the supplier who was late and didn't deliver as promised.
So, let's change the word "cheapest" to "best" and move forward in a better way.
The first and best advice I can offer is to stop. Breathe and relax.
Think of all the things important to your deceased, the wishes they may have shared and create the funeral event around them.
Rules of thumb:
- The more important the wish, the better to select the right product or service without breaking the bank.
- The small things that cost little can make all the difference.
I had an aunt that loved those hard round peppermint candies that, to me, tasted like Pepto Bismol. We never left her house without taking one. So at her funeral event, I bought a few packages and put them in bowls for people to take as they went.
The value of that emotionally connected item was priceless, yet cost about 4.00.
So, there you have it—my take on creating a meaningful funeral event.
Be mindful of what is important; take the time to purchase carefully and remember you are creating a positive foundation for moving on without the one you've celebrated and grieve.

Burial Shrouds A burial shroud can be as simple as a natural cotton wrapping placed in or on a casket or burial tray. There are also specially designed shrouds with reinforced strapping that allow pallbearers to carry the person and lower them into the grave. We’ve also worked with families who have provided their own shrouds. These products can be purchased online, locally, or through a funeral director who offers environmentally friendly funeral and burial options. Choosing a Natural Burial Product Whenever possible, I like to support local options. Here in Winnipeg, we are fortunate to have The Village Casketmaker , which has been making caskets and urns locally for more than 20 years. We also purchase natural cotton and make our own simple burial shrouds. Another option we support is Mourning Cloak Shrouds , which creates shrouds designed so they can also be used to carry the person. What Is Right for You?
